Many suppliers listed under "connector manufacturer" are trading companies or distributors that source from a factory and re-sell. That is a legitimate business, and for a stock part at low volume it can be the faster route. It stops working the moment your design needs anything beyond the catalog: a modified drawing, a new tooling, an alternate source for a discontinued part, or a firm answer on how long a part will stay in production. A manufacturer answers those from its own drawing office and tooling shop; a trader forwards the question. The tell is on the part page — whether the engineering drawing and 3D file are there, and whether every published value cites a source drawing.
A new product rarely picks a connector from a catalog. The height is set by the enclosure, the pin count by the interface, the mechanism by how the user handles the card or cable — and the connector is designed to fit. A supplier with design-in capability starts from your specification, proposes a part or a modification, and hands over drawings and samples for the layout. Embedded, industrial and medical products ship for longer than any connector generation. Ask the supplier what happens when a part is discontinued: whether a cross-reference to a mechanically compatible part exists, and whether old tooling can keep supplying.
